One person airlifted following Dui/Hit and Run traffic crash - Suspect arrested by LSO deputies

Laurel County, KY - Laurel County Sheriff John Root is reporting that: Laurel Sheriff's Deputy Brad Mink along with Deputy Josh Scott arrested Dewayne Doolin age 45 of Kidd Ave. Corbin on Saturday morning December 30, 2017 at approximately 9:42 AM.

The arrest occurred off Ralley Road, approximately 8 miles southwest of London after deputies were dispatched to a single vehicle traffic crash there where a female passenger in a silver colored Nissan Pathfinder was injured seriously, and the male driver had apparently fled the scene of the crash.

When deputies arrived at the scene, they located a bag of marijuana in the roadway near the driver's door of the vehicle involved in the collision.

Deputies developed information on the whereabouts of the driver and located him at a residence nearby.

The driver was identified as Dewayne Doolin who told deputies that he was driving the vehicle, and that that the marijuana in the roadway was his and must have fallen out of the vehicle. In addition he stated that he had smoked marijuana prior to driving the vehicle at the time of the collision. He also stated he knew his passenger was hurt.

An investigation was conducted and this subject was determined to be under the influence.

The passenger in the vehicle was identified as Karen Cottrell – this subject was airlifted to UK Hospital Lexington for treatment of a serious leg injury.

Dewayne Doolin was charged with leaving the scene of an accident; operating a motor vehicle under the influence – first offense; assault – second degree; possession of marijuana; failure to render aid and operating on suspended or revoked operators license.

In addition, this subject was charged on a Laurel District Court bench warrant of arrest charging failure to appear in court on charges of public intoxication – controlled substances; possession of marijuana; and contempt of court.

In addition, this subject was charged on a Laurel District Court bench warrant of arrest charging failure to appear for arraignment – involved in a property damage accident were he struck a barbed wire fence and took out several sections – regarding a charge of leaving the scene of an accident – failure to render aid and instructional permit violations.

This individual was lodged in the Laurel County Detention Center.
