New Seniors Safety Program in Laurel County

Laurel County, KY - Laurel County Sheriff John Root is pleased to announce that the Laurel County Sheriff's office will be providing a seniors or handicapped persons safety program free of charge.

The program, entitled "Operation C.O.A.S.T." (Check on a Senior Today) is designed to help seniors who may be living by themselves to be checked on by Sheriff's office staff. If the senior or handicapped person is by themselves their children or caregivers are more than welcome to give a phone number to the Sheriff's office and we will check on them.

This program can be used also during vacation months when families may be away. Sheriff Root is very excited about the program and says the timing couldn't be better with the cold temperatures that have been issued for the region.

Sheriff Root stated he will personally call the folks and hopefully get to know them on a first-name basis and if they are out of medicine or their electric is off or groceries are low- they can relay that to him and Sheriff Root will try his best to make adjustments to help.

Sheriff Root will also suggest good honest local people for any services they may need to assure our seniors are not being taken advantage of or scammed.

If for some reason the sheriff's office tries to call and no one answers deputies will automatically go to the listed address and do a welfare check just to make sure they're okay.

The patrol deputies will be given names and addresses of participants in the C.O.A.S.T program and from time to time deputies will stop by just for a simple hello and how are you doing today.

Sheriff Root said the program has been in the planning stages since September and the office is very eager to get started.

If you have a loved one who would like to participate you may call the office at 864-6600 or Sheriff John Root's personal cell phone at 682-8900.

The Sheriff's office is happy to be the sponsor of "Operation C.O.A.S.T.".
