Jones’ death was brought to light while Director Mike Razor reviewed documents to be destroyed and came across a one-line entry referring to the murder of an ABC Investigator in Nelson County in 1969.  Director Razor researched Jones’ death and found that he was employed at ABC beginning in 1965 until his murder in May of 1969.   What was once considered a non-related murder turned out to be tied to an investigation of Jones’s into the theft of whiskey from Bardstown’s Bourbon Open Golf Tournament.  The results of Jones’ investigation were lost to the passage of time; however the tragic events to follow were not.
 
     Investigator Jones was last seen on the night of May 12th 1969 interviewing three individuals regarding the whiskey theft, in front of a pool hall in Balltown Nelson County, six miles south of Bardstown.  The next morning, his lifeless, badly beaten body was discovered in a room above the pool hall.  On May 19th 1969 suspect Joseph H. Moore was arraigned in Nelson County Court and subsequently charged, convicted and sentenced to life in prison for the willful murder of ABC Investigator William L. Jones.

     Due to this discovery forty years later, ABC held a graveside ceremony to pay homage to Investigator Jones, officiated by Alcoholic Beverage Control Commissioner Tony Dehner and Enforcement Director Razor.  Several of Jones’ family attended including his son, Dan Jones.  Also to honor Jones’ sacrifice, numerous Alcoholic Beverage Control Investigators from across the state participated in the memorial service which included the playing of Taps, placing of a wreath on the grave and presentation of a flag to Investigator Jones’ son.
