Kentucky Counseling Association to meet November 13-15

Frankfort, KY— Ed Johnson, a nationally known speaker, will keynote at the opening session of the 62nd annual conference of the Kentucky Counseling Association at the Crowne Plaza in Louisville Nov. 13-15.

Johnson serves as the Associate Director for Training and Technical Assistance at the Southeast Addiction Technology Transfer Center (Southeast ATTC), based in Atlanta, Georgia. As a recognized trainer in the field, he will speak on Stigma, Opioid Use and Overdose: What’s the Connection?

Dr. Barbara McFarland, psychologist, author, media guest and motivational speaker will keynote the general session with Take Your Life Back! She is the co-founder of FlexLife and considered an expert on achieving work/life balance.

The Closing Awards Brunch on Friday morning will feature Jon Akers, Executive Director of the Kentucky Center for School Safety. He will share updates about SB 1, the School Safety and Resiliency Act with implications for all counselors.

The theme of the conference is “Counseling: Celebrating Human Resiliency.”

The KCA conference offers affordable EILA or CEs through a variety of pre-conference workshops and a wide range of informational breakout sessions for counselors and others who help students/clients overcome barriers to success in school or in adult life.

Featured workshops are: Trauma, the Body and the Brain (live remote with Dr. Bessel van der Kolk); Suicide Assessment, Treatment and Management; Tools and Techniques for Trauma-Informed Care; Infusing Trauma-Informed Practices into Comprehensive School Counseling Programs, Law and Regulations for Counselors and more.

Conference focus areas include clinical mental health and private practice, counseling ethics and legal issues, professionalism and self care, military, school, and substance abuse counseling.

A large exhibit hall will feature many services and products to supplement counseling programs.

The Kentucky Counseling Association is the state branch of the American Counseling Association.
