(FRANKFORT, Ky.) – Preliminary statistics* indicate that nine people died as the result of injuries sustained in seven motor vehicle-related crashes on Kentucky’s roadways from Monday, Nov. 4 through Sunday, Nov. 10.
One double-fatality, motor vehicle crash occurred in each of the following counties: Bath and Madison. One of the victims in the Bath Co. crash was not wearing a seat belt.
One single-fatality, motor vehicle crash occurred in each of the following counties: Allen, Floyd, Green and Woodford. None of the victims were wearing seat belts. The crashes in Allen and Woodford counties involved the suspected use of alcohol.
One pedestrian was killed in Jefferson County as the result of a crash that involved the suspected use of alcohol.
Through Nov. 10, preliminary statistics* indicate that 551 people have lost their lives on Kentucky roadways during 2013. This is 96 less than reported for this time period in 2012. Of the 421 motor vehicle fatalities, 210 victims were not wearing seat belts. Forty-four of the 70 motorcycle fatalities were not wearing helmets. The 10 ATV fatalities were not wearing helmets. Three bicycle riders have been killed. Forty-six pedestrians have been killed. One fatality involving an animal drawn vehicle has been reported. One person died when they jumped from a moving vehicle. A total of 123 fatalities have resulted from crashes involving the suspected use of alcohol. As of Nov.10, Kentucky has had 70 days with zero highway fatalities reported during 2013.
Citizens can contribute to highway safety by reporting erratic drivers to the Kentucky State Police toll-free at 1-800-222-5555. Callers will remain anonymous and should give a description of the vehicle, location, direction of travel and license number if possible.
*These statistics are still preliminary as KSP waits for all local law enforcement agencies throughout the state to report any crashes and fatalities that may have occurred in their areas.
