House Joint Resolution 129 sent to House Committee on Judiciary
FRANKFORT, Ky. - Representative Tim Moore, R-Elizabethtown has filed a bill urging Kentucky's Governor and Attorney General to appeal a recent ruling in federal court regarding recognition of same sex marriages from other states by the Commonwealth.
House Joint Resolution 129 was filed on Friday, and assigned to the House Committee on Judiciary Tuesday February 18, 2014.
"Voters overwhelming approved an amendment to our commonwealth's constitution that defines marriage as between one man and one woman, " said Rep. Moore. "The laws of other states or the ruling of a federal court should not trump the will of a majority of Kentuckians, which is why I'm calling on Governor Beshear and Attorney General Conway to immediately appeal the recent ruling in U.S. District Court."
HJR 129 cites the 2004 amendment to Kentucky's constitution stating that quote "...(the) United States District Court's ruling has infringed upon the sovereignty of Kentucky and usurped the will of its citizens, violating the principles upon which this Commonwealth's democracy is founded."
Rep. Moore adds he expects several members of the House of Representatives to sign on as co-sponsors to his proposal.
