Double fatal crash in Laurel County / Names & other details released

Laurel County, KY - Sheriff John Root is reporting that: Laurel Sheriff's Detective Sgt./Reconstructionist Chris Edwards along with Deputy Brad Mink investigated a two vehicle double fatal traffic crash which occurred on Monday night July 1, 2019 at approximately 9:31 PM. on Old Way, Road approximately 3 miles east of London.

The investigators report that apparently a Kia Rio passenger car traveling northbound on Old Way Road topped a small hill and struck a southbound Honda Odyssey van headon.

Both drivers were pronounced deceased at the scene by the Laurel County Coroner.

Four passengers in the Odyssey van were seriously hurt and were transported to St. Joseph Hospital London with two of those passengers who were children being airlifted to UK Med Center in Lexington.

• The driver of the Odyssey van was identified as Jamie Gillam age 38 of London pronounced deceased at the scene by the Laurel County Coroner.

A passenger in the vehicle -Kenneth Gillam age 46 of London was transported by Ambulance Inc. of Laurel County to St. Joseph Hospital London with multiple injuries.

In addition, three children in the vehicle ages 14, 11, and 6 were all seriously hurt, and were transported by ambulance to St. Joseph Hospital London for treatment of serious injuries with the 14-year-old and six-year-old later airlifted to UK Hospital Lexington.

• The driver of the Kia Rio was identified as James Dylan Johnson age 21 of London pronounced deceased at the scene by the Laurel County Coroner.

Agencies assisting at the scene included: Ambulance Inc. of Laurel County, the Laurel County Fire Department, the London City Fire Department, London Laurel Rescue Squad, Laurel County Coroner Doug Bowling, PHI Helicopter, and Air Evac Helicopter.

Laurel County Deputies assisting at the scene included: Deputy Allen Turner, Deputy Travis Napier, Deputy Robert Reed, Deputy Hunter Disney, Sgt. Greg Poynter, Detective Bryon Lawson, Bailiff Brent France and Deputy Gilbert Acciardo.

Investigation will be continuing.
