Off-Duty KSP Trooper And Local Citizen Save Child

Elizabethtown, KY. - KSP Post 4 Trooper Josh Cummings and local citizen Mark Wood (Elizabethtown) are being credited with helping save a four year old girl after a traffic accident.

On Wednesday, November 16, 2016 at approximately 3:00 EDST, Tpr. Cummings was off duty and returning home from the gym. As he was traveling down U.S. 31-W Bypass in Elizabethtown he pulled upon an accident scene involving a single vehicle that had left the roadway.

The witnesses that had already stopped to check on the passengers in the vehicle told Tpr. Cummings that there was a small child that wasn’t breathing. At this time Tpr. Cummings saw Mark Wood holding the four year old next to the vehicle and Mr. Wood stated to him that the child wasn’t breathing but had a pulse.

Both men immediately positioned the child for CPR and Mr. Wood gave rescue breaths while Tpr. Cummings monitored her pulse and gave chest compressions.

After several attempts they were able to get the child to breathe again on her own and were able to keep her breathing until EMS arrived.

The juvenile was eventually airlifted to Kosair Childrens Hospital where she is listed in stable condition.

The accident is still under investigation by the Elizabethtown Police Dept.
