Man Under Arrest Assaults Sheriff John Root At Complaint Scene In Laurel County, Ky.

LONDON, KY - Laurel County Sheriff John Root Along with Sgt. Brett Reeves arrested Derrick Tarvin age 26 of East Bernstadt on Tuesday afternoon October 6, 2020 at approximately 12:45 PM.

The arrest occurred off KY 3434 approximately 2 miles north of London after deputies were dispatched to a complaint of two male subjects fighting where one had allegedly knocked the teeth out of the other.

In addition, it was reported that the male subject then retrieved a handgun and shot up in the air.

When Sheriff Root arrived at the scene and placed the suspect under arrest a scuffle ensued where the suspect started punching Sheriff Root.

Additional deputies arrived at the scene as the suspect continued to fight with deputies there who subdued the suspect taking him into custody. Sheriff's investigators determined that the suspect was under the influence.

Family at the scene stated the suspect had been acting this way a few weeks.

Derrick Tarvin was charged with:

  • Disorderly conduct – Second-degree
  • Public intoxication – Controlled substances
  • Resisting arrest
  • Assault – third-degree – Police officer is victim
  • Assault – Second-degree
  • Wanton endangerment – Second-degree
  • Menacing

This individual lodged in the Laurel County Correctional Center.

Assisting for the Sheriff's office at the scene were: Laurel County Sheriff John Root, Sgt. Brett Reeves, Maj. Chuck Johnson, Capt. Robbie Grimes, K-9 Deputy Jake Miller Detective Robert Reed, Detective Taylor McDaniel, Deputy Jamie Etherton, and Deputy Dustin Saylor. Also assisting was Kentucky State Police.
