MANCHESTER, KY (July 5, 2021) - Stella B. House, Attorney-at-Law, PSC released the following statement today on behalf of the friends of the Hoskins Cemetery on Island Creek in Manchester, Clay County, Kentucky.

The friends of the Hoskins Cemetery on Island Creek are hosting a PEACEFUL PROTEST in downtown Manchester, Kentucky, on Thursday, July 08, 2021, at 2:00 P.M. to protest the Clay County Board of Education’s proposed relocation of this historic Cemetery in order to build a new baseball field.

Protest 2

In addition to loved ones of many local families with the surnames of Finley, Hoskins, Lewis, Sizemore, and others along with Native Americans, there are two WWI & two Civil War veterans buried in the Hoskins Cemetery plus a memorial for one US Army soldier killed in action in the Korean War and also Virgil S. Lewis, who died while serving his country, according to the epitaph on his tombstone.

We encourage the surviving family members of these descendants, all Native Americans (traditional dress encouraged), all US Veterans (military attire encouraged), and anyone with an interest in preserving American, state, and local history to join with us and protest the Clay County Board of Education’s petition to the Clay County Fiscal Court for the relocation of the Hoskins Cemetery.

Hopefully, healthy protesters can walk from the Clay County Administration building to Clay County Board of Education building and back.

Protesters need to park in the parking lot across from Pat’s Snack Bar and behind the Clay County Administration building or in the parking lot on the hill behind the First National Bank and meet at the gazebo in downtown Manchester.

Signs will be distributed from the gazebo, but please feel free to make and bring your own signs.

Protesters shall not enter the Clay County Administration building until right before the time for the Clay County Fiscal Court meeting at 3:00 P.M.

Do not go to the Clay County Judge Executive’s office or any other offices inside the Clay County Administration building.

At a few minutes before 3:00 P.M., walk peacefully to the Clay County Fiscal Courtroom on the second floor of the Clay County Administration building for the Clay County Fiscal Court meeting at 3:00 pm.
