Suspect in Hit and Run Traffic Crash located & arrested at a Motel near I-75 in Laurel County, Kentucky

LONDON, KY - Laurel County Sheriff John Root is reporting that: Laurel Sheriff's K-9/shift Sgt. Gary Mehler arrested Kevin J. Claxton age 41 of Cumberland Falls Highway, Corbin on Thursday night August 12, 2021 at approximately 7:15 PM.

The arrest occurred off Highway 770 at a motel approximately 10 miles South of London after deputies were dispatched to a complaint of a noninjury hit and run traffic crash which had occurred in Southern Laurel County.

The victim and a witness gave a description of a run vehicle as: a white Dodge Charger and a possible license tag, and a description of the driver being partially bald and having red hair.

Information was developed on the possible whereabouts of the suspect vehicle possibly located at a motel off Cumberland Gap Parkway.

Deputies proceeded to that location and located a white Dodge Charger in the parking lot and determined from management which room was rented by the suspect.

Deputies proceeded to that room and after knocking on the door several times the occupant came to the door and was described as partially bald with red hair. Deputies also noted that the hood on the white Dodge charger was hot to the touch indicating it had been driven recently.

The suspect was determined to be under the influence.

Kevin J. Claxton was charged with:

  • Leaving the scene of an accident
  • Alcohol intoxication

This individual was lodged in the Laurel County Correctional Center.
