Stabbing Suspect taken into Custody after two Knox County, Kentucky Schools in Proximity of the Scene placed on Hard Lockdown


BARBOURVILLE, KY (August 31, 2022) - The Knox County, Sheriff's Department is reporting that: Due to a stabbing incident in the city of Barbourville around noon today, Sheriff Mike Smith, the department's deputies, and school resource officers placed two schools in proximity of the scene on lockdown as a precaution.

Due to this incident, both Lay Elementary and Knox Middle School will not have after-school activities and no child will be allowed to walk home from their respective schools.

Knox County Sheriff Mike Smith states that the suspect, 32-year-old Steve Broughton is in custody as of approximately 3:00 P.M.

  • He will be lodged in the Knox County Detention Center
  • Charges are forthcoming

Our department wants to assure the public that no child was in danger during this incident due to the quick response from the schools and local law enforcement.

We are working closely with local authorities to bring this situation to a close as quickly and safely as possible.

Lay Elementary and Knox Middle families:
Our schools are on hard lockdown (no entry or exit) as a precautionary measure due to a police involved situation in part of the city. Our SROs (school resource officers) are at both schools. We will let you know when the status changes.

Knox County Public Schools reported at 2:15 P.M. that:

Knox County Public Schools will be dismissing on regular schedule at all campuses this afternoon. We will have extra law enforcement and administrative staff on site to assist the impacted schools.

  • No students will be permitted to walk home from KCMS or Lay
  • No after-school activities will be held at KCMS or Lay
