FATAL PLANE CRASH IN HARLAN COUNTY, KENTUCKY

BAXTER, KY (November 4, 2022) - The Kentucky State Police is reporting that on November 3, 2022 at approximately 10:00 A.M. KSP Post 10 Harlan, began receiving calls of a loud noise south of the Tucker Guthrie Memorial Airport.

A short time later, KSP was notified that a small plane had been located. KSP responded along with other officials within the county.

THE BIG ONE - WRIL 106.3 FM is reporting that: WRIL has spoken to Harlan County Coroner Jim Rich who tells us that the pilot, the sole occupant, has been identified as 55-year-old Ophthalmologist Dr. David Sanford - of Knoxville, formerly of Middlesboro. At approximately 9:51 A.M the FAA lost the plane from radar as it approached the airport.

Det. Andy Soltess will be conducting a death investigation while the FAA will be investigating the cause of the crash. Also assisting at the scene were Harlan Rescue Squad, Harlan Fire Dept and Sunshine Fire Dept.

BAXTER, Ky. (November 3, 2022) – On November 3, 2022 at approximately 10:00 a.m. Kentucky State Police Post 10 Harlan, began receiving calls of a loud noise south of the Tucker Guthrie Memorial Airport. A short time later, KSP was notified that a small plane had been located. KSP responded along with other officials within the county. KSP is currently securing the scene until the FAA arrives and begins their investigation. KSP can confirm no known survivors at this time. The body will be sent to the State Medical Examiners Office in Frankfort for identification.
