Deputy Injured During Arrest of Fleeing Theft Suspect in Laurel County, Kentucky

LONDON, KY (November 20, 2023) - Laurel County Sheriff John Root is reporting that: Laurel Sheriff's Deputy Austyn Weddle arrested Christopher Bowling age 37 of Bert Allen Rd., London on Saturday evening November 18, 2023 at approximately 6:15 PM.

The arrest occurred near a residence off Bert Allen Road, approximately 3 miles east of London after Deputy Weddle was dispatched to an “attempt to locate” regarding an alleged stolen vehicle that may be located off Bert Allen Road.

The stolen vehicle report was being investigated by London City Police Officer Hobie Daugherty, and was a Chev. Silverado pickup that had been stolen from a business parking lot off KY 229 in London earlier in the day. Information was developed by London P.D. on a possible location on the stolen vehicle.

When Deputy Weddle arrived in the vicinity to investigate, he located the stolen vehicle and noted a male subject with the vehicle.

As Deputy Weddle exited his patrol vehicle, the male suspect began running and ignored multiple commands from Deputy Weddle to stop. The suspect fled into the backyard and into the woods behind the residence as Deputy Weddle gave chase.

The suspect scuffled with Deputy Weddle down a steep embankment causing injury to Deputy Weddle's leg resulting in a puncture wound.

Upon being taken into custody by Deputy Weddle, the suspect was transported by Ambulance Inc. of Laurel County to St. Joseph Hospital London for treatment of possible injury where he was treated and released.

Deputy Weddle was examined at the scene by EMS. Deputy Weddle drove himself to the hospital where he was treated and released.

The accused, Christopher Bowling was charged with wanton endangerment – first-degree – police officer is victim; fleeing or evading police – second-degree – on foot; resisting arrest; disorderly conduct – second-degree.

Assisting at the scene to retrieve the accused from over the steep embankment was: London Laurel Rescue Squad. Also assisting was Ambulance Inc. of Laurel County. London City Police Officer Hobie Daugherty also assisted. Deputies assisting at the scene were: Laurel Sheriff's Deputy Zach Allen, Deputy Cyruss McVey, and Deputy Nate Bishop.

**London City Police Officer Hobie Daugherty charged the accused regarding his stolen vehicle case.

Bowing additionally charged with Receiving Stolen Property, and also charged on an outstanding warrant.

Christopher Bowling was lodged in the Laurel County Correctional Center.
