Ongoing Investigation after Bomb Threat Delivered by Email Initiates Mid-Week Evacuation of Kentucky State Capitol

All-clear issued for normal business to resume

FRANKFORT, KY – The Kentucky State Police is reporting that Wednesday morning January 3, 2024 at approximately 8:30 a.m., KSP was contacted by the Kentucky Secretary of State’s Office concerning a bomb threat at the State Capitol received via email.

 KSP Facilities Security and Legislative Security branches worked quickly to evacuate the building.

Troopers from Frankfort Post 12 and the Special Operations Branch, including the Hazardous Device Unit and K9 section, responded to identify or locate any potential threats. After a thorough search of the Capitol building and grounds, the threat was found to be unsubstantiated. At approximately 12:00 p.m., KSP issued an all-clear for normal business to resume.

State Capitols in Connecticut, Michigan, Georgia and Mississippi were also evacuated for similar threats.

The investigation remains ongoing by the Lexington FBI Joint Terrorism Task Force, of which KSP is a member.
