ADAMS APPLAUDS BILL TO REQUIRE CIVICS EDUCATION, HOUSE BILL 535 WOULD MANDATE CIVIC LITERACY COURSE IN KENTUCKY

FRANKFORT, KY - Secretary of State Michael Adams is applauding Reps. Robert Duvall, James Tipton, Shawn McPherson, Scott Sharp, and Walker Thomas for filing House Bill 535, which would require completion of a civic literacy course to graduate from a Kentucky high school.

“Our kids are getting their information about government from TikTok rather than the classroom, and we’re seeing the results,” said Adams. “I commend these legislators for taking this crucial first step to ensure our next generation is capable of self-government.”

Last month, Adams released a Civic Health Assessment that showed half of Kentuckians do not know even such basic things as the three branches of government. In response to the findings, Adams called on the General Assembly to require civics education in all Kentucky high schools.
