Shelbyville, Tennessee Woman Arrested, Charged in TBI Medicaid Fraud Investigation

BEDFORD COUNTY, TN – A Shelbyville woman faces felony charges following a financial exploitation investigation by special agents assigned to the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation’s Medicaid Fraud Control Division.

On March 20, 2023, after receiving information from the Tennessee Department of Human Services Adult Protective Services, TBI agents began investigating Mary Ann Pruitt (DOB 4-20-1942). During the investigation, agents determined Pruitt was in possession of a debit card belonging to a former tenant of her residence, a TennCare recipient, and used the tenant’s debit card to make unauthorized personal purchases and cash withdrawals at businesses in several counties over an approximately two-year period.

On Monday, the Bedford County Grand Jury returned indictments, charging Pruitt with one count of Financial Exploitation of a Vulnerable Adult and one count of Theft. On Wednesday, authorities arrested Pruitt and booked her into the Bedford County Jail on $25,000 bond.

NOTE: The TBI’s Medicaid Fraud Control Division receives 75 percent of its funding from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services under a grant award totaling $8,983,614.75 for federal Fiscal Year 2023-2024. The remaining 25 percent, totaling $2,994,538.25 for Fiscal Year 2023-2024, is funded by the State of Tennessee.
