Murder Investigation in Harlan County, Kentucky

EVARTS, KY – On June 29, 2020 at 8:40 p.m. Kentucky State Police, Post 10 Harlan received a call about an assault involving a male and female in the Evarts community of Harlan County. Troopers responded to the residence located off of Ky 38 and began an investigation.

 The initial investigation indicates a verbal argument between Derick Adams, 35 years old of Evarts and his aunt Sherry Brashear, 56 years old of Evarts had occurred outside of a residence. Mr. Adams began physically assaulting her before he struck her in the head with a cinder block. Ms. Brashear was flown from the scene to Pikeville Medical Center for treatment.

Ksp Post 10 was notified Ms. Brashear succumbed to her injuries at 2:28 a.m. on June 30, 2020.

Mr. Adams was arrested at the scene and lodged into the Harlan County Detention Center for Assault 1st Degree. Additional charges are pending at this time.

Case is under investigation by Det. Andy Soltess.

UPDATE

On June 30, 2020 Mr. Adams was served with an arrest warrant for the murder of Ms. Brashears.

He is now being charged with one count of murder.
