One Person in Police Custody after Shooting at a High School in Virginia

NEWPORT NEWS, VA (September 20, 2021) - The Newport News Police Department is reporting that in reference to the Heritage High School shooting investigation, one person  is in police custody.

Update 3: Shooting — Heritage High School

In reference to the investigation below, one person — a male juvenile — is in police custody.

The investigation remains ongoing.

Chief of Police Steve Drew wants to thank the officers for their quick response and our local and federal public safety partners for assisting in the quick apprehension of this suspect. He would also like to thank Newport News Public Schools and the community for their assistance.

Update 2:

In reference to the investigation below, two other individuals were taken to a local hospital with injuries related to evacuating the school. Those injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

The individuals who were shot have been confirmed to be a 17-year-old male and a 17-year-old female.

A suspect is not in custody at this time; however, the suspect is no longer in the school. Evidence has been recovered at the scene. It is believed that the suspect is known to the victims.

We are actively searching the building at this time to ensure no students are inside the building.

The investigation remains ongoing. We will provide updates as more information becomes available.

In reference to the release below. Two people were taken to the hospital with gunshot wounds that are not believed to be life-threatening.

There have been reports that there are active shooters at other schools in the city. That information is false.
