East Bernstadt Man Arrested During a Complaint Investigation in Laurel County, KY

LONDON, KY - Laurel County Sheriff John Root is reporting that: Laurel Sheriff's Deputy Jay Smallwood arrested Layton L. McQueen age 42 of East Bernstadt on Sunday night May 4, 2025 at approximately 8:28 PM.

The arrest occurred on Little Arthur Ridge Road, approximately 5 miles north of London after Deputy Smallwood was dispatched by London – Laurel County 911 Communication Ctr. to an armed suspicious person's complaint there.

Upon arrival in the vicinity of the complaint Deputy Smallwood observed the suspect by a description he had received and upon attempting to make contact with the subject, the subject began to flee on foot.

Following a foot pursuit, Deputy Smallwood located the suspect hiding in a brushy area taking him into custody. No weapon was located.

Deputy Smallwood placed the accused in his police cruiser and began transport noting that the accused began threatening him and screamed and struck the protective cage and continued to do so. The accused was then transported to a local hospital where he was medically cleared and then transported and lodged in the Laurel County correctional center.

Layton McQueen was charged with:

  • Fleeing or evading police – second-degree – on foot
  • Disorderly conduct – second-degree
  • Terroristic threatening – third-degree
  • Menacing
