Historic Appalachian Food Summit & Appalachia Proud Dinner to Take Place in Hindman, Kentucky!
What started as a Facebook group made up of people from across the U.S. interested in traditional Appalachian food has grown into an upcoming historic gathering.
The first annual Appalachian Food Summit: A Celebration of Our Appalachian Food Heritage will take place Sunday, May 18th from 12:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Hindman Settlement School in Hindman, Kentucky.
This multi-state gathering, the first of its kind, is bringing together authors, chefs, farmers, advocates, scholars and consumers dedicated to preserving traditional Appalachian foodways and supporting a future where farming, local food and culinary tourism are part of economic development in the region.
The Summit will include a program with keynote presentations by notable heirloom seed saver Bill Best and award-winning documentary filmmaker Jamie Ross, a book signing with Appalachian cookbook authors, an oral history booth where participants can share their Appalachian food memories and an information fair featuring regional food and farm organizations. !
The Summit will conclude with a dinner sponsored by Kentucky Proud’s new Appalachia Proud label. The dinner is being prepared by acclaimed chef Travis Milton, a native of Castlewood, VA, with produce, dairy and meats culled from mountain farms in Kentucky, West Virginia, Virginia and Tennessee.
The day’s program from 12:00p.m to 6:00p.m. is free and open to the public. Tickets for the dinner are sold out. !
