FREE programs offered by the Clay County Extension Office in March 2015

How to Better Market Produce will be on March 10th at 6 pm at the EXCEL building beside McDonalds. Sharon Spencer, UK Farmers Market Specialist, will be with us to show those that will sell at the Farmers Market how to improve their display of vegetables.  This is a CAIP approved educational program.  FREE & open to the public!  Please call 598-2789 to register.

Raising Pastured Poultry will be March 12th at 6 pm at the EXCEL building beside McDonalds. Laura Rogers, KSU Small Farm Area Agent, will be with us to help producers prepare their farms to raise pastured poultry for their family’s consumption.  This is a CAIP approved educational program.  FREE & open to the public!  Please call 598-2789 to register.

Eating Gluten Free will be on March 12th at 6 pm at the Clay County Extension Office. Do you think you need to prepare foods that meet the gluten free requirements? We will be sampling some foods made gluten free. You will learn options for baking and purchasing gluten free products.  This is a CAIP approved educational program.  FREE & open to the public!  Please call 598-2789 to register.

Vegetable Good Agricultural Practices & Tobacco Good Agricultural Practices will be March 16th at 6 pm at the Laurel Co. Extension Office. Bonnie Sigmon, Laurel Co. Horticulture Agent, will be presenting Good Agricultural Practices for vegetable growers & Dr. Bob Pearce with UK Plant & Soil Sciences will present information for tobacco producers.  This is a training that you will need in order to give out samples at the Farmer’s Market. Food sampling training will also be a part of the GAP training. This is a CAIP approved educational program.  FREE & open to all vegetable & tobacco producers.

Pruning Demonstration will be March 17th at 1:30 pm at the Jim Bob Cornett Farm in Fogertown. Chris Smigell, UK Extension Associate-Fruit Crops, will demonstrate pruning techniques on large and small fruit.  This is a CAIP approved educational program.  FREE & open to the public!  Please call 598-2789 to register.

Taking Control of Your Diabetes will be March 17th, 24th, and 31st at 6 pm at the Clay County Extension Office. Have you recently been diagnosed with diabetes and want to receive diabetes recipes?  Are you wondering what carbohydrates are and why you need to monitor them?  Do you have a family member that needs help?  Taking Control of Your Diabetes will provide you with information to help you understand and control your diabetes.  This program is a repeat of the program we offered last year. Installing a Package of Bees and Pests, Insects, Diseases & Medications that Affect Bees will be March 24th at 6 pm at the EXCEL building. Laura Rogers, KSU Small Farm Area Agent and avid beekeeper, will be with us to talk about keeping your bees free of insects, pests & sickness.  Also, join us to learn how to take a purchased package of bees and install them in a hive.  This is a CAIP approved educational program.  FREE & open to the public!  Please call 598-2789 to register.

Silver & Gold Fair will be March 25th from 10 am – 2 pm at the EXCEL building.  Are you a male or female 50 years or older?  Then this fair is for you.  We will have information specifically for those of us that have experienced the many stages of life.  We have about 15 booths already committed to attending that day with the possibility of more.  Encourage your friends to attend.  We would love to see you there.  FREE & open to the public!

Zertangle will be March 26th at 6 pm at the Clay County Extension Office.  What is Zertangle?  Zertangle is an easy to learn, relaxing and fun way to create beautiful images of drawing patterns.  Everyone can do it.  It is just using lines and circles to create a design.  Come have fun with us as we learn Zertangle.  FREE & open to the public, but please call 598-2789 to register.

►There will be two Grafting Meetings on Tuesday, March 27, 2015 at the Laurel County Extension Office for your convenience. There will be a grafting session at 10:00 am and one at 6:00 pm. So you can sign up for the one that best serves your needs. Call 598-2789 to sign up for the grafting meeting that you want to attend. Also, there will be a Pruning Demonstration at 1:30 pm.  Meet at the Laurel Co. Extension Office at 1:00 pm to follow someone to the pruning location. Many like to go to the 10:00 am grafting session, have lunch and then go to the pruning demonstration. Usually the pruning site will have a variety of fruit trees, grapes, blueberries, blackberries and raspberries to demonstrate pruning. Please call 598-2789 to register.  FREE & open to the public!

Nourish Your Bones, Leader’s Training, will be March 30th at 1:00 pm at the Clay County Extension Office. Rebecca Sharp will share what you can do to nourish your bones for healthy, happy bones.  This is a CAIP approved educational program.  FREE & open to the public, but please call 598-2789 to register.

Corn & Soybean Production meeting will be March 30th at 6 pm at the Laurel Co. Extension Office.  Dr. Chad Lee, UK Grain Crop Specialist, will be at the Laurel Co. Extension Office to talk about corn & soybean production. He will discuss this past year’s issues and new opportunities for 2015.  This is a CAIP approved educational program.  FREE & open to the public! You MUST call 598-2789 to register by March 23rd.

Clay County Community Farmer’s Market Vendor Meeting will be on April 2nd at 6:00 pm at the EXCEL Center beside McDonalds.  We will have our initial meeting to get everyone registered, look at the rules and collect dues.  I hope that everyone will make every effort to attend these important meetings.
