(Chavies, KY) - A Perry County man was fatally wounded late Sunday evening during a confrontation with Kentucky State Police Troopers
Troopers had responded to Doctors Row in the Chavies community of Perry County, in response to a shots fired complaint called in by Constable Ben Stidham. Constable Stidham had been patrolling near the Wendell Ford Airport, when he advised he heard several gunshots coming from a camper near where he was conducting a traffic stop. He was uncertain if the gunfire was intended for him.
Troopers from KSP Post 13 Hazard began arriving near the scene at approximately 9:28 p.m.
Troopers attempted to make contact with 53 year old Michael Asher of Chavies, who was inside the camper. Mr. Asher began ranting toward the Troopers, but refused to come out and speak with them. KSP Post 13 dispatchers attempted to contact Michael Asher by phone after obtaining his number from a neighbor, but he didn't answer.
A short time later, Michael Asher opened the camper door, armed with a firearm. Troopers advised that he began raising the gun up toward them, at which time they opened fire, fatally wounding Michael Asher before he was able to fire at them.
Perry County Deputy Coroner Johnny Collett pronounced Michael Asher deceased at the scene. No one else was injured during this incident.
An autopsy has been scheduled for later today at the State Medical Examiner's Office in Frankfort. Lieutenant Ryan Catron with KSP Post 13 is leading this investigation. He is being assisted by LT. Jennifer Sandlin and LT. Randy Surber.
