Theft by unlawful taking & other charges - Laurel County

Laurel County, Ky. - Sheriff John Root is reporting that Deputy Shawn Jackson arrested Jonathan Dawson age 31 listing an address of a local motel in London early Monday morning July 20, 2015 at approximately 3:20 AM.

The arrest occurred at Walmart near Corbin in southern Laurel County after Deputy Jackson was dispatched to a complaint that a male subject had placed two computers, a computer mouse and a 32 inch flatscreen TV into a shopping cart and ran out the front entrance pushing the shopping cart along with him.

This subject fled into a wooded area nearby and was located by Deputy Jackson coming out of the wooded area short time later, and was arrested.

This subject was determined to be under the influence and stated he had been smoking meth. In addition, it was determined that this subject had been arrested at Walmart just two weeks before for shoplifting and was banned from returning to the store.

The subject told Deputy Jackson that he was stealing the merchandise because he had a court date this morning and thought he would be able to sell the items quickly to get money to put on his books in jail. This subject also stated that he was going to push the shopping cart to London to sell the items. Total value of the stolen items was $991.

Jonathan Dawson was charged with theft by unlawful taking more than $500; fleeing or evading police – second-degree – on foot; criminal trespassing – third-degree; and public intoxication – controlled substances and was lodged in the Laurel County Detention Center.
