Phone Scam investigation

Laurel County, Ky. - Sheriff John Root is reporting that the Laurel County Sheriff's Office is conducting an investigation into an apparent phone scam which is occurring in Laurel County currently.

The caller advises they are from the IRS and that money is owed them –and that the IRS would take legal action to take away their house, car, and even drivers license, or have them arrested by law enforcement.

Obviously, this is a phone scam attempting to extort money from unsuspecting persons.

If anyone receives similar phone calls, they should either disregard the call and not answer it, or if they answer it hang up on the caller, and definitely do not send any money, or give out any information to these people.

The IRS only corresponds by mail.

The sheriff's office continues to investigate.
