Child abuse arrests in Laurel County

Laurel County, KY - Sheriff John Root is reporting that Detective Kevin Berry arrested two individuals on Friday afternoon September 4, 2015 at approximately1:21 P.M. regarding a child abuse investigation that has been conducted involving a four month old female infant that became unresponsive on Tuesday morning September 1, 2015 at approximately 7:30 AM.

The infant became unresponsive at the residence of it's mother Bessie Sizemore on Hazel Patch road approximately 8 miles north of London and was airlifted from London St. Joseph Hospital to UK med Center in Lexington for treatment of life threatening injuries.

The infant was found to have at least one broken rib, abusive head trauma, and multiple bruising all consistent with child abuse and has been in intensive care at UK Hospital since Tuesday morning. The infant has never regained full consciousness, and will likely have permanent disability.

Arrested was Bessie Sizemore age 24 of Hazel Patch road , East Bernstadt -- the biological mother charged with criminal abuse – first-degree – child 12 or under and assault – first-degree both charges regarding the four month old female infant; also charged with criminal abuse – third-degree – child 12 or under and assault – fourth degree – child abuse regarding her two-year-old female infant.

Also arrested was the cousin of Sizemore's husband identified as Michael Henson age 36 of Hazel Patch Rd., East Bernstadt and is a nearby neighbor, who helped care for the children --- charged with criminal abuse – first-degree – child 12 or under and assault – first-degree regarding the four-month-old female infant; also charged with criminal abuse – third-degree – child 12 or under and assault – fourth degree – child abuse regarding the female two-year-old.

Two other children in the home-- a seven-year-old female and a two-year-old female were removed from the home on Tuesday morning and placed by Kentucky Social Services in the care of a relative.

Assisting on the investigation were for Laurel Sheriff's office: Sheriff John Root, Capt. Chuck Johnson, Lieut. Greg Poynter, Sgt. Brett Reeves, Detective James Sizemore, and Detective Charlie Loomis, and other deputies.

Also assisting was Tammy Grimes with Kentucky Social Services and Laurel County Commonwealth Atty. Jackie Steele.

Both subjects charged on this investigation were lodged in the Laurel County Detention Center.
