Woman charged with endangering the welfare of a minor and alcohol intoxication - Laurel County

Laurel County, KY - Sheriff John Root is reporting that Deputy Kyle Gray along with Deputy Jamie Grimes arrested Ruth Marcum, age 49, of Maple Grove School Rd., London, on Tuesday night January 12, 2016, at approximately 8:05 PM.

The arrest occurred off Maple Grove school Road, approximately 4 miles south of London after deputies were dispatched to a complaint that a female subject had called Laurel 911 Dispatch Center and wanted the Sheriff's Department to remove children from her residence.

When deputies arrived at the scene, they were initially unable to get anyone to come to the front door of the residence. Deputies learned from a 13-year-old and 17-year-old juvenile outside the residence that their mother had allegedly drank a bottle of alcohol and told them to leave and get out of the residence.

Deputies were finally able to get this subject to come to the door of the residence, conducted an investigation, and learned that Ruth Marcum had apparently drank a fifth of vodka. Deputies detected a strong odor of alcoholic beverages on her breath, and determined that she was under the influence.

Deputies also located a male and female juvenile inside the residence, ages 8 and 12, and determined they were Marcum's grand kids. Apparently, the mother of the grandkids was in the hospital and the grandkids had been left in the care of their grandmother.

Also, it was determined that the heat in the residence was not working completely and Marcum was using her stove to help heat her residence. Social services were called and the children were placed with an aunt.

Ruth Marcum was charged with endangering the welfare of a minor and alcohol intoxication and was lodged in the Laurel County Detention Center. Photo attached is courtesy of the Laurel County Detention Center.
