Phone scam being reported in Laurel County

Laurel County, KY - Sheriff John Root is reporting that Sgt. Josh Gaylor is investigating a phone scam that is circulating in the Laurel County area.

The caller identifies himself as Lieut. Mark Richardson of the Laurel County Sheriff's office at phone number 606-202-0857. He goes on to tell his intended victims that they are to go and put $1000 and $997 on two cards and to stay on the phone with him.

He tells them that they missed a jury court date. The phone number comes back to a cell phone number. This is a scam. We have no one at the Sheriff's office by this name.

In addition, we do not conduct business like this. We would never tell citizens to put money on a card because they missed a jury court date. If anyone gets a call from this individual, they are asked to not follow any instructions from this individual.

Please write down any information and contact the Laurel County Sheriff's office at 606-864-6600. We do have an active investigation regarding this case. Once again, do not follow any instructions that this individual gives you – this is a scam to get money from unsuspecting victims.
