Subject arrested after allegedly passing out behind the wheel of running vehicle in Laurel County


Laurel County, KY - Sheriff John Root is reporting that Sgt. Robbie Grimes along with Deputy Rick Cloyd arrested a male subject of South US Highway 25, Corbin, on Thursday night, April 21, 2016, at approximately 10:14 PM.

Arrested was Michael Simpson, age 54.  The arrest occurred on US 25 approximately 9 miles south of London near a crash scene that deputies were already investigating where Michael Simpson was sitting in traffic as a result of a crash involving a DUI driver that had crossed the centerline and struck another car injuring three people in that car.

When traffic began to flow, a light-colored blue Ford Taurus did not move. When deputies went up to the vehicle, they observed this subject passed out under the driver's wheel, vehicle still in drive with the motor running.

Deputies conducted an investigation on this subject determining that he was under the influence. This subject stated he had taken hydrocodone and gabapentin earlier.

In addition, this subject stated he had drank whiskey earlier in the day and had taken a couple of painkiller pills.

Michael Simpson was charged with operating a motor vehicle under the influence – first offense; failure to wear seatbelts; failure of owner to maintain required insurance – first offense; and other traffic violations and was lodged in the Laurel County Detention Center.
