IRS Impersonation Tax Scam

OFFICIAL PRESS RELEASE

Knox County Sheriff Mike Smith would like to inform citizens that five people have been arrested by federal authorities regarding an IRS Impersonation Tax Scam.

The caller would advise that they were an IRS or Treasury Official and tell the victim that they owned tax debts and were going to be arrested if they did not pay them immediately by sending a MoneyGram, Walmart2Walmart and other wiring services.

The five individuals arrested were Cuban Nationals and lived in the Miami, Florida area. Several people in Knox County had reported they had received such calls in the past.

Sheriff Smith would like to caution everyone not to respond to these type calls. The IRS and Treasury Officials would not call anyone on the telephone demanding tax payments through any money transfer systems.
