Cumberland collision injures two

Highway 160 closed for nearly an hour

CUMBERLAND, Ky. Kentucky State Police on Monday, June 13, 2016 investigated a single vehicle collision which injured two people on Highway160. KSP in Harlan received the call shortly after 5 p.m.

According to the investigation by Trooper Kenneth Sergent, Jennifer Young, of Cumberland, was operating a 2015 Chevrolet Malibu, traveling southbound.  She exited a steep curve and observed another vehicle backing toward her in her lane of travel.  Ms. Young attempted to avoid the impact by turning onto a steep driveway.  The front, driver-side tire of the vehicle dropped off the driveway causing the vehicle to roll-over onto its top. Contact was not made with the backing vehicle.

Ms. Young and her passenger, Robert Young, also of Cumberland, received several injuries in the collision. Both were transported to Harlan Appalachian Regional Hospital by Life-Care EMS, Inc. Both occupants of the vehicle were wearing their seatbelts.

Tri-Cities Emergency Rescue Squad personnel responded to the scene and assisted KSP with point control until the roadway was reopened.

Investigation into this collision is ongoing by Trooper Sergent.  He was assisted by Trooper Jake Spurlock.
