Over 380 pills seized after suspected DUI stop


Whitley County, KY - WCSD is reporting that at around 5:30 p.m. June 16, 2016, Sergeant Kirk Mays was patrolling around the Whitley County Schools campus. He observed a van traveling South on US Hwy 25 leave the roadway multiple times.

Sgt. Mays continued to observe the van and conducted a traffic stop near Butch’s II. The driver, Casey Stephens, 33, of the Beck’s Creek area had four children in the vehicle. She showed signs of intoxication and could not complete field sobriety tests.

Upon being placed under arrest for DUI, Stephens admitted to possessing drugs. From her person, approximately $290 was seized, and located in her purse was over 380 pills believed to be Xanax of three different milligram levels.

The children were placed into the care of a family member. Stephens was transported to a local hospital but refused to submit to any tests to determine her intoxication level.

Stephens was lodged in the Whitley County Detention Center and is charged with third-degree trafficking in a controlled substance, DUI (with an aggravator) and reckless driving. She is also charged with four counts of first-degree wanton endangerment due to the children in the vehicle.

Sgt. Mays is continuing the investigation.
