Breathitt County Woman Shoots, Kills Husband

Date of News Release: 06/26/2016

South Fork, KY (June 25, 2016) - A Breathitt County man died after being shot by his wife, and two other people were seriously injured during a shooting incident late Saturday evening.

Kentucky State Police Trooper David Hobbs and Detective Gary Sandlin responded to the Kentucky River Medical Center around 10:50 p.m., after receiving information that two gunshot victims had been brought into the emergency room.

At the hospital, Troopers spoke with Alex Hurt and Heather Sizemore, both of whom had received a single gunshot wound to the chest. Conversation with the victims revealed that both had been shot by Sandra Hurt, the mother of Alex Hurt.

Additional KSP personnel responded to KRMC to assist with the investigation. Both Alex Hurt and Heather Sizemore were transferred to the University of Kentucky Medical Center for further medical treatment.

Several KSP officers responded to a residence on Cook Fork Road in the South Fork community, to attempt to locate Sandra Hurt. At the residence, investigators located a male subject who appeared to have a fatal gunshot wound, and a female who was unresponsive.

EMS arrived at the residence and transported the female, Sandra Hurt, to KRMC where she was admitted to ICU for treatment of undetermined medical issues, not related to gunshot wounds. Her husband, 47 year old Henry Hurt of South Fork, was pronounced deceased at the scene by Breathitt County Coroner George Griffith.

An autopsy was scheduled to be performed at the State Medical Examiner's Office. Investigators expect to obtain an arrest warrant on Sandra Hurt, for one count of Murder, two counts of Attempted Murder, and two counts of Wanton Endangerment 1st Degree. Due to her medical condition, it is unsure when she will be formally charged. Detective Joe Dials with KSP Post 13 is leading this ongoing investigation.
