Morris Edwin Lay


Morris Edwin Lay, 86, of Smithsburg, MD, passed away Wednesday, October 17, 2018 at his home.

Born in a log cabin in Pine Knot, Kentucky, Morris was the second of 3 children to parents E. Manuel Lay and Kizzie Kathren (King) Lay.

He was preceded in death by older sister, Doris Oswald and younger brother, MC Lay.

He is survived by his wife, Sally Lay; 3 children: Barry K. Lay and wife, Karen of Glenville, WV, Bradford M. Lay and wife, Barbara of Buckeye, WV, and Barbara Copley and husband, Fred of Cincinnati, OH. He is also survived by 6 grandchildren, Corrie Gogg, Alexandria Sears, Amanda Lopata, Christopher Copley, Sabrina Ingram and Ryan Copley; 11 great-grandchildren and half-brother, Ronald Lay and half-sister, Caroline Ryder.

Morris was a graduate of Clay County High School, earning a BS in Industrial Arts from WV Tech, and a M.Ed in Industrial Education from the University of Maryland. He served in the Maryland National Guard as chief warrant officer W2 and 2 years in the U.S. Army in the Korean War.

Morris taught Industrial Arts for 30 years in the Washington County Public High Schools. He was a deacon and Sunday School teacher at Greencastle Baptist Church, where he also cooked and fixed things. He was a life member of the American Legion Dixon-Troxel Post 211 and a past president of the Williamsport Country Club. He was named Tall Cedar of the Year 1987 by Supreme Tall Cedar, Lemoine V. Dickinson.

Morris enjoyed playing golf, cooking and hunting. He was a charter member of the Hickory Ridge Hunt Club and a life member of the South Mountain Rod and Gun Club. He was Past Master of Medairy Lodge #140 and was inducted into the Legion of Honor in the Chapel of the 4 Chaplains in Temple University in Philadelphia.

Family will receive friends, Tuesday, October 30, 2018 at the Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, 1331 Eastern Blvd. North, Hagerstown, MD, from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm. There will be a Masonic Memorial Service at 7:30 pm conducted by Medairy Lodge #140.

A Memorial Service will be held Wednesday, October 31, 2018 at 11:00 AM at the Greencastle Baptist Church, 2377 Buchanan Trail West, Greencastle, PA 17225, with Pastor Don Woody officiating.

Interment will be held privately at the convenience of the family.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Medairy Masonic Scholarship Fund and mailed to Jon P. Galley, 17829 Garden Spot Dr., Hagerstown, MD 21740.
