Complaint of theft suspect being held at gunpoint / Laurel County

Jeffrey S. Dixon

Laurel County, Ky. (November 20, 2019) - Sheriff John Root is reporting that: Laurel Sheriff's K-9 Deputy Gary Mehler arrested Jeffrey S. Dixon age 31 of Blackey, Kentucky on Tuesday night November 19, 2019 at approximately 10:02 PM.

The arrest occurred on connector 7 Side Rd. of East Hal Rogers Pkwy. approximately 3 miles east of London after Deputy Mehler was dispatched to a complaint of a subject allegedly attempting to steal a vehicle from private property and was being held at gunpoint by the victim.

Prior to arrival at the scene, Deputy Mehler learned that the theft suspect had fled the scene on foot headed across East Hal Rogers Pkwy. onto a side Road – a good description of the suspect was dispatched.

When Deputy Mehler arrived in the vicinity he located the suspect on the connector side Road. When Deputy Mehler confronted the suspect from approx. 40 feet away, the suspect became extremely agitated cursing, telling Deputy Mehler repeatedly to shoot him and refused to cooperate with Deputy Mehler's commands to remove his hands from a large coat he had on (Deputy Mehler was unsure whether the suspect was armed with a weapon).

The suspect continued to be extremely belligerent and uncooperative and within 10 feet of the suspect, Deputy Mehler was able to gain control of the suspect who continued to be uncooperative.

An investigation was conducted and it was learned that allegedly this individual had attempted to steal a Chevy S-10 pickup from a private driveway. This individual had tore pieces of the steering column and had wires hanging in an attempt to hotwire it, however he did not know the vehicle was not in running condition.

The home owner heard a commotion outside and confronted the suspect trying to detain the suspect who fled the scene on foot.

Deputy Mehler also determined that the suspect was under the influence.

Jeffrey S. Dixon was charged with:

  • Attempted theft of auto $500 or more but under $10,000
  • Criminal trespassing – second-degree
  • Menacing; resisting arrest
  • Public intoxication – controlled substances

This individual was lodged in the Laurel County Correctional Center.
