Terroristic Threatening arrest off Sinking Creek Road in Laurel County

LONDON, KY - Laurel County Sheriff John Root is reporting that: Laurel Sheriff's K-9 Deputy Gary Mehler along with Deputy Allen Turner, Deputy Travis Napier, and Sgt. Greg Poynter arrested James M. Smith age 56 of London on Tuesday night February 25, 2020 at approximately 9:37 PM.

The arrest occurred off Sinking Creek Road, approximately 6 miles west of London after deputies were dispatched to a complaint of a male subject shooting a shotgun in the area and threatening to shoot the caller.

When deputies arrived at the scene, and located the suspect, they learned that he had discarded the loaded weapon behind a building there.

In addition, they also located a loaded handgun discarded in a field apparently by the suspect.

The suspect was also determined to be under the influence.

James M. Smith was charged with:

  • Wanton endangerment – second-degree
  • Terroristic threatening – third-degree
  • Public intoxication – controlled substances

This individual was lodged in the Laurel County Correctional Center.
