Fatal head-on collision on US 119 on Tan Yard Hill in Harlan County, Kentucky

CALVIN, KY - (November 11,2020) – On November 11, 2020 at 11:05 A.M. Kentucky State Police, Post 10 Harlan received a call of a two vehicle collision on U.S. 119 on Tan Yard Hill, which is located approximately 9 miles from Pineville. Troopers from Post 10 responded to the scene and began an investigation.

Initial investigation indicates Cillis Young (75) of Loyall was operating a 2006 silver Saturn southbound on U.S.119. Mr. Young crossed the centerline into the path of a 2018 Freightliner garbage truck.

The Waste Connection garbage truck was struck head on. Mr. Young's vehicle then left the roadway and stopped against an embankment. Mr. Young was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the collision and was ejected from the vehicle. Mr. Young was pronounced deceased at the scene by the Bell County Deputy Coroner. Mr. Young was the only occupant inside of the vehicle.

The operator of the Waste Connection truck, Benjamin Fair (32) from Dayhoit didn't sustain any injuries from the collision.

Drugs and alcohol are not suspected into the collision.

Collision is under investigation by Det. Rodney Sturgill. Also assisted at the scene were Bell County Fire Depart, Bell County Deputy Coroner, KSP Commercial Vehicle Enforcement and troopers from Post 10.
