FATAL SHOOTING REPORTED SATURDAY IN MANCHESTER, KENTUCKY WILL BE PRESENTED TO CLAY COUNTY GRAND JURY

MANCHESTER, KY - According to the Kentucky State Police, a fatal shooting reported to KSP Post 11, London on Saturday, September 16, 2023, will be presented to the Clay County Grand Jury.

At approximately 1:45 A.M. Saturday morning, Post 11, London was notified of a shooting on U.S. 421 N in Manchester, KY where the Clay County Sheriff’s Office had initially responded to the scene and then requested KSP assistance.

Kentucky State Police troopers responded to the scene and began an investigation.

The preliminary investigation revealed that Jason E. Smith, age 44 of Manchester, KY was trying to break into a residence in Clay County off U.S. Hwy 421 when a male subject residing at the residence confronted him at the front door after which a physical altercation occurred that led to, the male suspect attempting to break into the home (Jason Smith) being shot by the subject residing there.

Mr. Smith was transported to AdventHealth ER in Manchester by Clay County EMS where he was later flown by Air Evac to the University of Kentucky Albert B. Chandler Hospital in Lexington, KY, where he succumbed to his injuries.

The Fayette County Coroner’s Office pronounced Mr. Smith deceased.

An autopsy is scheduled at the Medical Examiner’s Office in Louisville.

According to the Kentucky State Police, this case will be presented to the Clay County Grand Jury.

KSP Detective Gay is continuing the investigation.

Detective Gay was assisted at the scene by Kentucky State Police personnel and the Clay County Sheriff’s Office.
