SEIZED AFTER SEARCH INITIATED BY FREE K-9 AIR SNIFF (Pulaski County Sheriff’s Office)

ARREST AND DRUG SEIZURE AFTER K-9 CONDUCTS FREE AIR SNIFF DURING TRAFFIC STOP IN PULASKI COUNTY, KENTUCKY

SOMERSET, KY - Pulaski County Sheriff Bobby Jones reported on Tuesday, April 9th, 2024, that a Monticello man was in custody following a traffic stop.

The incident began when Detectives with the Pulaski County Sheriff’s Office Narcotics Division observed a Lincoln passenger car commit a traffic violation near the intersection of Griffin Avenue and Eckstein Street. Detective Tan Hudson conducted a traffic stop of the vehicle, which was occupied by two male subjects.

During the stop, Detective Hudson discovered Jerrod William Mikel (left), age 38, of Monticello, a passenger in the vehicle, had an outstanding warrant for his arrest.

While checking the warrant information, Detective Trent Massey arrived on scene and deployed his K-9, Leo to conduct a free air sniff of the vehicle.

Following the walk around of the vehicle, Detective Massey stated K-9 Leo alerted on the vehicle, indicating the presence of illegal narcotics.

Detectives began a search of the vehicle and located a back pack in the passenger side floor.

Inside of the back pack, Detectives located:

  • Methamphetamine (approximately 14.9 grams)
  • Heroin (approximately 1.6 grams)
  • Marijuana (approximately 10.7 grams)
  • A syringe
  • Ammunition for a 9MM.

In the back floor Detectives located a 9MM handgun with the same ammunition located inside of the back pack.

Detectives researched Mikel’s criminal history and discovered he had prior drug trafficking convictions, Mikel also had felony convictions, which prohibited him from possessing a firearm.

Once the search was complete Jerrod Mikel was arrested and charged with the following:

  • Trafficking in controlled substance 1st degree 2nd offense >or= 2GMS Methamphetamine (Enhancement)
  • Trafficking in controlled substance 2nd offense or > offense (Heroin) (Enhancement)
  • Trafficking in Marijuana less than 8OZ 2nd > offense (Enhancement)
  • Possession of handgun by Convicted Felon
  • Drug Paraphernalia – Buy/Possess (Enhancement)

This individual was lodged in the Pulaski County Detention Center.

The case remains under investigations by Detective Tan Hudson. The Narcotics Division was assisted on the scene by Chief Deputy Todd Wilson.
