CLACKAMAS COUNTY, OR -- Shortly before 1:00 a.m. on Wednesday, July 9, 2025, Clackamas County Sheriff's Office deputies responded to a report of a single-vehicle crash near the intersection of SE 97th Avenue and SE Park Mountain Lane in unincorporated Clackamas County.
A vehicle had reportedly crashed and gone down an embankment into a wooded area, coming to rest upside down. Witnesses reported hearing children inside the vehicle.
When deputies arrived at the crash scene, a witness had retrieved one child, age 4, from the 2021 Jeep Compass, and told first responders that another child was still inside.
Deputies made their way down the embankment to the vehicle. Working with responders from Clackamas Fire, they were able to retrieve the second child, age 1, from inside. The children’s mother, who was driving the vehicle, was found inside deceased. Family notifications have been completed, and the woman has been identified as Mattie Lee Kelley, age 24 of Happy Valley.
Both children were transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Oregon Department of Human Services (DHS) was notified.
The Sheriff’s Office Criminal Reconstruction and Forensic Technicians (CRAFT) team responded to the scene. At this time, investigators believe impairment may have been a factor in this crash.
