Fatal Traffic Crash / Knox County

(Barbourville, Ky.) On February 23, 2015 at 2:20 a.m. Kentucky State Police, Post 10 Harlan was contacted by the Barbourville Police Department to assist with a fatal accident on KY 3439, two miles south of Barbourville.

Preliminary investigation indicates that an officer with Barbourville Police Department observed a 2008 Nissan Altima traveling on KY 3439 with no headlights.

Before a traffic stop could be initiated, the vehicle traveled off the left hand shoulder of the roadway and overturned ejecting both occupants.

The driver, a 13-year old juvenile, was pronounced deceased at the scene by the Knox County Coroner.

The passenger, a 14-year old juvenile, was transported to the Knox County Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Neither driver nor passenger were wearing seatbelts at the time of the collision.

Collision is still under investigation by Master Trooper Mike Cornett.

Also assisted at the scene were Captain Phillip Burnett, Tpr. Chad Gregory, Tpr. Frank Russell, Sgt. Jason Joseph, TFC Shane Jacobs, and Barbourville Police Department.
