(LONDON, KY.) – On Saturday, April 23, 2016 at approximately 4:00 PM, Kentucky State Police Post 11, London received a report of fatal traffic crash on the Hal Rogers Parkway near the 30 mile marker in Clay County.
Upon arrival, Trooper Michael Howell determined that a 2007 Volkswagon passenger car, operated by Lizzie Sawyers, 77, of Hyden, was traveling eastbound when she crossed the center line and struck a 2010 Chrysler van head-on being operated by Charles Sweeney, 74, of London.
Sawyers, was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the collision and was flown to the University of Pikeville Medical Center where she died several hours later. Her passenger Coston Sawyers, 90, of Hyden, was pronounced dead at the scene by the Clay County Coroner’s Office.
Sweeney and his passenger Helen Sweeney, 75, of London were both flown to the University of Kentucky Medical Center to receive treatment for their injuries.
No drug or alcohol usage was suspected.
Trooper Howell is in charge of the investigation and was assisted at the scene by Clay County Sheriff’s Office, Manchester Fire Department, Big Creek Fire Department, Clay County EMS and Clay County Coroner’s Office.
