Pursuit and Arrest of Laurel County man by Manchester Police


Clay County, KY - MPD is reporting that on May 25, 2016 Officer Jeff Couch of the Manchester Police Department was dispatched to a call of an intoxicated person behind the wheel of a truck on Old US-421.

Upon arrival Officer Couch discovered Stephen W. Roberts of Blackwater Road in Laurel County passed out behind the wheel of a Chevrolet 1500 pickup.

Officer Couch got Stephen Roberts out of the vehicle and performed field sobriety tests and determined him to be under the influence.

Stephen Roberts then ran back to his vehicle and attempted to get a firearm from the vehicle. Officer Couch then pulled his duty weapon and was ordering him from the vehicle. Stephen Roberts then took off in his vehicle.

Assistant Chief Patrick Robinson and Officer Tabert Napier then joined in the vehicle pursuit onto KY 80 where Stephen Roberts was attempting to swerve and run the police cars off of the roadway.

The pursuit went onto Crawfish Road where Stephen Roberts was throwing items from the vehicle. The pursuit ended on Cox Hollow Road where Stephen Roberts exited the vehicle and brandished a 357 revolver at the Officers. Stephen Roberts then ran into the woods where he was caught by Police.

Stephen Roberts was charged with DUI, Fleeing and Evading Police, Wanton Endangerment, Possession of a controlled substance, resisting arrest, and improper turning.
