KSP - Murder Investigation / Whitley County


London, Ky. (July 26, 2016) – On Monday, July 25, 2016 at approximately 6:22 PM, Kentucky State Police Post 11, London received a report of a fatal collision involving two pedestrians on KY HWY 895 in the Canadatown community of Whitley County.

Upon arrival, Accident Reconstructionist Trooper Delzie Kelly determined that a 2004 Suzuki Forenza operated by Sonia P. Askins, 46, of Williamsburg was traveling southbound on KY HWY 895 when she crossed the centerline and struck two pedestrians Joshua L. Bennett, 37, of Williamsburg and Teresa L. Ward, 40, of Williamsburg that were walking southbound.

Ward was pronounced deceased at the scene by the Whitley County Coroner’s Office.

Bennett was transported to the Baptist Health Medical Center in Corbin where he was treated for his injuries and released.

Askins was arrested at the scene and lodged in the Whitley County Detention Center and charged with Reckless Driving, Operating a Motor Vehicle under the Influence, Leaving the Scene of an Accident, Murder, Assault 1st Degree, Tampering with Physical Evidence and Failure to Maintain Required Insurance.

Trooper Kelly is continuing the investigation. He was assisted at the scene by Troopers from Post 11, Whitley County Sheriff’s Office, Whitley County EMS and the Gold Bug Fire and Rescue.
